The proposal to bring permissionless transaction verification to Arbitrum passed the temperature check vote today (14th), meaning the Ethereum Layer 2 network with the highest Total Value Locked (TVL) has taken another step towards implementing Stage 2 Rollup.

Following the approval of the vote, Arbitrum is expected to propose an upgrade to its smart contracts to adopt BOLD governance proposals. BOLD is a new dispute resolution protocol that allows anyone to become a validator on Arbitrum, enhancing the chain’s security by reducing the risk of delay attacks. Currently, validators for withdrawals from Arbitrum to the Ethereum base layer are restricted to a permissioned list.

The proposal from Arbitrum stated:
BOLD went live on the Arbitrum testnet in April this year. If approved by ArbitrumDAO, BOLD is expected to be implemented on Arbitrum One and Nova at some point in the summer of 2024.

Meanwhile, competitors using Optimistic rollups, such as Optimism, have recently released Fault proofs on their Layer 2 blockchain OP Mainnet, advancing towards Stage 1 Rollup in terms of decentralization like Arbitrum.
