China and the United States Engage in Tariff Negotiations

He Lifeng pointed out in an interview with reporters that recently, senior officials from the United States have repeatedly expressed through various channels to the Chinese side their hope to adjust tariff policies and discuss related issues. In response, the Chinese side conducted a serious assessment and agreed to visit Switzerland from May 9 to May 12, during which time negotiations with the United States regarding tariff issues will take place.

However, the Chinese side reiterated that regardless of whether facing confrontation or negotiation, the determination to safeguard its own development interests will not change, nor will it waver in upholding international fairness and justice and maintaining the global economic and trade order. The Chinese side emphasized:

“We will resolutely counterattack when provoked, but the door to dialogue is always open. Any dialogue and negotiation must be based on mutual respect, equal consultation, and mutually beneficial outcomes.”

Regarding negotiations between other economies and the United States, the Chinese side also pointed out:

“Concession cannot bring peace, and compromise cannot win respect. Upholding principles and fairness and justice is the correct way to safeguard one’s own interests.”

In addition, China will adhere to openness and multilateralism, insisting on a multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO), and will share development opportunities with all countries.
