Recently, many users on the overseas community platform Reddit have expressed that after 10 years of waiting, Mt. Gox has started sending compensation in Japanese yen through PayPal to users who have chosen cash refunds. Many users have shared screenshots of the emails they received, initially thinking it was an internet phishing scam, until they confirmed that the funds were indeed credited to their PayPal accounts.
However, shortly after, several members of the community reported receiving duplicate payments from Mt. Gox and shared official emails from the bankrupt exchange, in which they acknowledged a system error and requested the return of the mistakenly paid additional compensation.
As more and more community members reported the same issue, discussions about whether to return the additional compensation started in the community. Some members jokingly suggested that Mt. Gox should complete identity verification and wait for another ten years before making the repayment.
However, others cautioned users who received duplicate payments to repay them promptly to avoid legal consequences.
