The next major network upgrade for Ethereum, called “Dencun Upgrade,” was successfully launched on the Ethereum testnet Sepolia last night, signaling that only one more testnet remains before the “proto-danksharding” feature is implemented on the Ethereum mainnet.

Proto-danksharding aims to reduce the cost of transactions and data availability in the Ethereum two-layer network by introducing a new data structure called “blob.” As the number of two-layer networks on Ethereum is rapidly increasing, this upgrade is seen as an important component of the ecosystem roadmap. Following the completion of the upgrade, the new data structure named “Blob” is now flowing within the Sepolia network.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, explained that earlier this month, Ethereum core developers deployed the first testnet upgrade on the Goerli testnet. After the completion of the Sepolia upgrade, Ethereum core developers will conduct the final test on the Holesky testnet on February 7th. Subsequently, developers will sign the date to activate the Dencun Upgrade on the main blockchain.
