According to a report from “Hong Kong 01”, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong conducted a court-ordered search of six locations of the cryptocurrency project Worldcoin in Hong Kong today (31st), and requested relevant parties to hand over relevant documents and data.
The Privacy Commissioner’s Office stated that the operation of Worldcoin in Hong Kong involves serious risks to personal data privacy, and believes that the collection and processing of sensitive personal data by the organization may involve violations of local privacy regulations. In order to protect the privacy of citizens’ personal data, the organization has launched an investigation into Worldcoin according to established procedures.
Based on information collected by the Privacy Commissioner’s Office, individuals participating in Worldcoin need to allow the organization to collect their iris information through iris scanning in order to obtain a registered identity (World ID) and receive the cryptocurrency WLD for free. Rudy Farn, Acting Senior Personal Data Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Privacy Commissioner’s Office, stated that identifying the responsible person is one of the investigation methods, but since the Office does not have the authority to prohibit the operation of the six locations of Worldcoin, they can only appeal to citizens to be cautious.
