Trump Holds Open Attitude Towards Bitcoin
Opposition Softens
Host Laura Ingraham asked Trump during the show whether he would consider supporting Bitcoin, given its decentralized nature compared to CNBC, as well as its unique appeal among young people and the African American community.
In response, Trump acknowledged Bitcoin’s growing popularity and even observed that more and more people are using it for payments:
“Many people are accepting it. And more and more, I see people wanting to pay with Bitcoin. You’re seeing some interesting things happening, and I have an open mind about it.”
However, Trump later added that he still maintains his long-standing preference for the powerful “dollar” currency.
Trump had previously expressed his lack of support for Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies in a tweet in 2019, stating that he doesn’t believe they are real money and describing them as “created out of thin air.” He reiterated his viewpoint in 2021, criticizing Bitcoin as a scam against the dollar.
While Trump did not express much subjective opinion about Bitcoin, his softened opposition towards cryptocurrency seems to significantly contrast with his previous statements. This shift from outright skepticism to cautiously acknowledging Bitcoin’s position in the economy may reflect a changing understanding of Bitcoin by Trump, or perhaps these changes are merely a façade created to appeal to young voters.
