According to a previous report by Zombit, Nexon, the developer of the popular online game “MapleStory,” originally planned to build a dedicated application chain called Polygon Supernet on the Polygon ecosystem as the infrastructure for their new blockchain game project, “MapleStory Metaverse.” However, recent disclosures indicate that Nexon has changed its mind and decided to use Avalanche blockchain instead of Polygon.
“MapleStory Metaverse” is a new project derived from the classic MMORPG game “MapleStory,” aiming to incorporate blockchain elements to create a whole new gameplay and experience for players. For example, in-game items will be marked as NFTs, and players will be able to earn and collect NFT items through the game to unlock various benefits or functionalities within the entire ecosystem. And all of this will be realized through the dedicated application chain “subnet” in Avalanche. Nexon will utilize it to launch the first game in the “MapleStory Metaverse” series, “MapleStory N,” expected to be released on PC by the end of 2024.
As for why Nexon decided to no longer use Polygon and chose to collaborate with Avalanche instead, insiders revealed to Decrypt that the reason was that Polygon Labs stopped supporting Polygon Edge (which allows application developers to build custom Ethereum-compatible chains) at the end of last year in order to focus on developing Polygon CDK. This prevented Nexon from continuing development on the Polygon ecosystem, leading them to adopt Avalanche’s subnet architecture.
Angela Son, the project lead of “MapleStory Metaverse,” stated:
