US presidential candidate Donald Trump held a special event for holders of Trump NFTs at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Wednesday evening. During the event, he expressed his support for cryptocurrencies and claimed that current US President Joe Biden is clueless about them. Trump even pointed fingers at Gary Gensler, the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stating, “Gensler is very much against it, and Democrats are too. But I will say, a lot of people support it.”
In another video shared by Frank, co-founder of NFT project DeGods, Trump stated that he would welcome campaign donations in cryptocurrencies, saying, “If you can’t, I will make sure you can.”
It was reported that a meme coin called $BODEN, based on Biden, was mentioned during the NFT event. Trump responded to attendees, saying, “A coin is worth so much money, and I don’t like that kind of investment.” According to DexScreener data, both $BODEN and another meme coin based on Trump called $TREMP saw an increase after Trump’s discussion about cryptocurrencies.
Views from the outside
During his presidency, Trump expressed his lack of support for cryptocurrencies, believing that unregulated crypto assets could foster illegal activities. However, his views on digital assets have changed in recent years, and some believe that his victory in the November US presidential election would be beneficial for Bitcoin.
Ron Hammond, the Government Relations Director of the Blockchain Association, linked this Mar-a-Lago event to a resolution passed by the US House of Representatives condemning the SEC’s crypto banking policy.
Fox Business reporter Eleanor Terrett noted that last night’s remarks were “Trump’s first public endorsement (or even discussion) of ‘cryptocurrency’ as a whole, not just Bitcoin.”
