The University of Wyoming plans to launch the UW Bitcoin Research Institute in August, aiming to provide “expert research in the same field” on Bitcoin. Bradley Rettler, a Bitcoin activist and associate professor at the University of Wyoming, announced the establishment of this new institution on the X platform on July 28 and will serve as the director of the institute.
Bradley Rettler expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of research on Bitcoin, considering it “poor quality,” and emphasized the need for more expert research in the industry to ensure the public can correctly understand the nature and operation of Bitcoin.
He specifically mentioned a study led by Professor Camilo Mora of the University of Hawaii in 2018, which claimed that Bitcoin production alone could cause global temperatures to rise by 2 degrees Celsius before 2048. Bradley Rettler criticized the study for not taking into account difficulty adjustments and a lack of understanding of the block size limit. In a tweet on July 28, Bradley Rettler emphasized:
The University of Wyoming’s Bitcoin Research Institute will officially open in the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and will host annual summer workshops, provide academic incentives, and hold weekly seminars.
